The Monster Munch Monsters are the mascots for Monster Munch crisps. They were introduced in 1977 and were discontinued in 1994 and then brought back in 2008 for nostalgia purposes.
History[]
In the beginning, there were five monsters, all of whom would represent various flavours, depending on which were shown in the ad. A pink monster represented solely Roast Beef flavour, and a blue monster represented "Saucy" flavour as it was known at the time, but also Sizzling Bacon flavour and Salt & Vinegar. A yellow monster represented Pickled Onion, but also Cheese and Onion and Saucy flavour. An orange monster represented both Prawn flavour and Pickled Onion, this monster even replaced the yellow monster in TV ads at the start of the 80s. The pink monster was the tallest, having a long neck and a long tongue which he used to eat the Monster Munch. The yellow monster was a cyclops-like creature with a big red nose and long arm which he used to grab onto things. The blue monster was the only one with ears and toes, he also had many arms and wore a hat with a yellow star at the top. The orange monster was round and was the only monster with hair.
Other monsters would also appear in the TV ads, mostly as background characters but in some cases, they would be there as part of a mini-story within the ad, such as a giant monster who would judge which flavour was the biggest or a witch who stole bags of Monster Munch but in some cases the extra monsters were used to advertise other forms of Monster Munch, such as a big-eared green monster, advertising bigger bags. A smaller green monster was introduced in the early 90s, a child monster who would disturb the big monsters whilst they were sleeping by making noise with the free stuff found in Monster Munch. Sometime in 1994, the monsters were replaced by clay monsters who shoved children in mincers and dropped anvils on each other in wacky cartoon style, but that's another article entirely. In 2008 the original four monsters from the late 70s were brought back, now only representing one flavour, with the blue monster now representing "Flamin' Hot", a flavour introduced in the 90s, and the orange monster was now excluded. Despite returning, there wasn't a new TV ad with them, possibly due to the original costumes being lost, prompting Monster Munch to launch a "Find Our Monsters" campaign, but to this day they have not been found and there hasn't been a new TV ad with the Monsters.
Merchandise[]
There was quite a lot of merchandise made when the Monster Munch Monsters were starring on TV, including a Monster Munch Munchers Club pack where members would receive several items such as a membership card, pens, books, games, transfers and a story tape called "Tall Stories". There were also hand puppets sold in the mid-80s, bike gizmos known as "Spokey Dokeys" sold in the early 90s and plush toys of the big green monster which a child in the 80s could win, making them very rare. There were also Monster Munch Monster fizzy drinks sold sometime in the 80s called Monster Fizz, but they didn't last long.
