Mac Tonight was the mascot of McDonalds Dinner and Breakfast Menu from 1988 to 1989 in the US (with a brief reappearance from 1996 to 1997) and 2007 in Southeast Asia.

Appearance

Mac Tonight is an anthropormorphic Moon dressed in a black 2 piece suit with an equally black tie. He wears the already mentioned black suit, 50s style sunglasses and has a Moon for a head. He wears a red bowtie in some merchandise.

Personality

Mac Tonight acts like a cool 50s/60s jazz player, with his dark sunglasses and laid back attitude. He plays the piano and sings parodys of jazz songs, like Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin. He was inspired by Max Headroom[1].

Use in advertising

Mac Tonight was used as McDonald's Dinner and Breakfast Menu mascot from 1986 to 1989 / 1996 to 1997 (US) and 2007 (Southeast Asia). He appeared in promotional art, toys and TV commercials. In these ads, he played the piano and sang jazz songs while moving around a city landscape, turned back time, flew to space and sneaked into a kid's bedroom to give him a McMenu (not creepy at all). He only showed up in one TV commercial in Southeast Asia, in which he played the saxophone and sang about McDonald's 24 hour menu.

MoonMan

In the late 2000's, Mac Tonight began to be used as a violent and racist meme by the name MoonMan, in which he would rap to racist and violent parodies of popular songs. It was forgotten, but in 2015 the meme came back as part of the Alt-right movement. After that, McDonald's began to remove everything they could about the character, from animatronics to Youtube videos and websites.

Popular Culture

Aside from MoonMan, Mac Tonight is fondly remembered as a part of 80s nostalgia and TV commercial lovers alike, having even a petition  on Change.org  for McDonald's to bring him back, but after the racist MoonMan meme, it would be very unlikely that Mac Tonight will ever be brought back as a McDonald's mascot. Mac Tonight is also the main antagonist of the horror fan-game series"Five Nights with Mac Tonight" , which is based on the popular horror game "Five Nights at Freddy's".
